About Len

After college, a stint in the Army with the First Cavalry Division, law school, and a private practice, Len Speier (1927-2017) somehow returned to his first love, the photo arts, and was so engaged for nearly fifty years. Len photographed extensively in his hometown of New York City, and also in various other parts of the world, including China, Spain, Portugal, France, Denmark, Suriname, and Japan. He taught photography for many years – at The New School, at New York University, and, for over 16 years, at the Fashion Institute of Technology. For ten years, until 1999, Len mentored children of color in the art of photography for the NAACP's ACT-SO program.

Len Speier's work is in the permanent collections of the International Center of Photography, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the Museum of the City of New York, and the New York Public Library's Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Division of Art, Prints and Photographs, in addition to numerous private collections.

Vintage prints are available via Daniel Cooney Fine Art.
